4 Most Common Dental Procedures

While dental procedures can seem intimidating, most procedures are much more common than you realize. Each day, there are people just like you who need to have a common dental procedure. And sometimes arming yourself with more information can make the whole process seem like less of a big deal. So, let’s take a look at four of the most common dental procedures.

These are just a few of the most common dental procedures.

Common Dental Procedures: Fillings and Repairs

Tooth trauma or decay makes it necessary to have restorative materials used to repair your teeth. Your dentist will determine if you do have tooth decay through cavity detecting dye, laser fluorescence detection aids, and x-rays. If you have tooth trauma, it will generally be caused by breaking or cracking your teeth, teeth being worn from tooth grinding, or damaging your teeth by constantly using them to open things. There are several materials that can be used to repair your teeth, but the most common material is a composite filing. This will be made from a tooth-colored resin which will act and feel like natural teeth. Your dentist will determine the best material to use for your individual needs.

Common Dental Procedures: Root Canals

Root canals, also known as endodontics, are one of the most common types of dental procedures in America. Root canal treatment involves removing the tooth’s pulp. The pulp is a very small, thread-like tissue that is in the center of the tooth. Your dentist will clean, shape and fill the tooth when the pulp is removed.  When decay starts to advance near the pulp, the tooth will be at risk of infection. At this point, it will normally begin to ache. If you don’t treat this issue, pulp from a dead tooth can start to create a buildup of pus in the root tip in your jawbone. This can form an abscess. An abscess is dangerous because it can eventually destroy the bone that is surrounding the tooth and cause an extreme amount of paint.

Common Dental Procedures: Tooth Extractions

When you have a tooth extraction, your tooth will be removed from its socket in your bone. While there are many reasons why you may need to have a tooth extracted, the most common reason is that a tooth is broken. Or, you may have to have a tooth extracted because it is decayed. Before extraction, your dentist will usually try other methods to fix you tooth. This could include a crown or a filing before the dentist relies on extraction.

Common Dental Procedure: Teeth Whitening

Teeth will darken as we age, so it’s very common in today’s world to get teeth whitening services. But aside from age, teeth can also be stained from tea, coffee, cigarettes, and drugs. No matter why you need teeth whitening, it is one of the most effective ways to improve the appearance of discolored teeth.
